Austria – Sun skiing in the Stubai Valley
Spring is actually the best time to still go skiing or snowboarding. When the days get longer again, the sun’s rays make the snow glisten, you can combine carving with refreshment stops on sunny terraces in pleasant temperatures and the slopes are still nice and grippy. The ski resorts in the Stubai Valley are predestined for this. On the one hand, with the Stubai Glacier, which is open until 20 May due to its altitude of up to 3,000 metres. On the other hand, there are also hard-working employees who take care of snow management in the areas throughout the whole season. Mixed with unique events, sun skiing in the Stubai Valley is a real treat.
It is no coincidence that the Stubai Valley still has perfect slopes in spring. Already in autumn, in the first cold days, the preparations for compact descents begin, which are then intensively maintained throughout the season.
Grippy slopes every day
Every day, the snow groomer drivers are fully committed to ensuring that there are grippy runs ready for guests every morning. They become active when all skiers have left the slopes. The preparation for the approximately 150 kilometres of slopes in the valley takes place in the evening in the dark. In a number of night shifts, snow groomer drivers are on the road with modern tracked vehicles equipped with snow management systems and consolidate the snow. If the weather is dry, they start immediately after closing time, at 4 p.m. In case of fresh snow, the slope will not be prepared until the second half of the night. In such a way that the fresh snow can be compacted in the best possible way. The results are perfect, long-lasting routes on which carving or boarding is still wonderfully possible, even in spring.
Skiing fun on the Stubai Glacier well into spring
At over 3,000 metres, the Stubai Glacier offers the best conditions for skiing and snowboarding in spring. Numerous downhill runs, the Powder Department, the Stubai Zoo Snow Park, the BIG Family offer for children and restaurants with sunny terraces ensure that everyone gets their money’s worth. Spring skiing is enriched with a variety of events. For example, the Freeride Testival, the largest freeride test event in Europe, will take place on 16 and 17 March on the glacier for the second time. From 24 March on, boarders and freestyle skiers will be able to work on their tricks during the Spring Sessions. A great set-up awaits them at the Stubai Zoo. In general, the Stubai Glacier ski resort with its slopes and facilities will be open up to 20 May 2024. The offer that children up to the age of ten will be transported free of charge throughout the valley, if accompanied by a paying parent, will also continue to this date.
Ever grilled in the snow?
The Schlick 2000 ski centre lives up to its reputation as the most sociable ski resort in the Stubai Valley, even in spring. At the Ski & BBQ barbecue event, skiing is combined with live music and first-class food from the successful German barbecue team “GutGlut” for two days in a row. On 9 and 10 March at 2,136 m above sea level, the best from the grill and from the smoker will be served directly at the Panorama Restaurant Kreuzjoch. So, if you’ve always wanted to have delicious food from the grill in the snow, you shouldn’t miss it. The large ski area in the front of the Stubai Valley is still open until 7 April and until then the Stubai ski pass can still be purchased for four days or more.
